About the Cateran Trail

The Cateran Trail is a delightful trail that offers walkers the chance to explore an unspoilt part of the Scottish Highlands and heads though atmospheric glens, farmland, forests and stunning mountainscapes.

The route takes its inspiration from the Caterans, the cattle thieves that roamed the lawless regions of the Highlands between the 15th and 17th centuries. The long-distance walking route makes use of many of the old drove roads and tracks once utilised by the Caterans.

The Caterans raided cattle extensively across the Highlands but the rich farmlands of Glen Isla and Strathardle were popular haunts. Tradition has it that the cattle thieves would return by a different way route from the one they used to arrive, utilising ancient drove roads through remote glens.
