Navigation and map reading courses for Women
Women learn map reading differently to men and generally learn better in an all female group for a number of reasons. We at Glentrek have found that our 'women only' groups are more relaxed with each other and feel more able to ask questions (repeatedly!) when they don't get the hang of it the first time.
Book on one of our women only navigation courses and we guarantee you will have a fun day of exercise in the outdoors, see some spectacular scenery and most importantly learn some map reading skills so you don't always have to rely on 'someone else' to show you the way and ensure your safety in the mountains. Our instructors aim to make the courses informative, interesting, relaxed and fun for everyone.
While many people now make use of electronic GPS gadgets, it is still important that you know how to navigate in difficult weather conditions using a map and compass.
We can arrange bunkhouse or B&B accommodation for you while attending a course. You have the option of attending just one or both days.
Women only Navigation Course
Basic navigation skills are not difficult to learn and with the right tuition our female beginners find they learn the skills. This course is for anyone who is keen to learn and no prior navigation skill is required. Some of the areas covered on our 1 or 2 days courses are:
- Introduction to an ordnance survey map and compass
- Understanding how to use the main map symbols and scales
- How to take a 6 figure grid reference for any given position and also locate such a reference on the map
- Orientating the map with and without a compass
- Using the orientated map to identify land features and indicate direction of travel
- Choosing simple navigation strategies and routes
- Using linear features (e.g. paths and tracks) as handrails in simple navigation exercises
- Understanding access rights and responsibilities
