Navigation is an important skill for all levels of walker - and if you plan to take off on your own walking adventure then it's an essential element to ensure your safety in the hills and mountains.
While many people now make use of electronic GPS gadgets, it is still important that you know how to navigate in difficult weather conditions using a map and compass.
Basic navigation skills are not difficult to learn and with the right tuition walkers will find they quickly learn the skills. The ideal course for you would be our Glentrek Navigation for Beginners Courses.
This course is for anyone who is keen to learn and no prior navigation skill is required. Some of the areas covered on our 1 or 2 days courses are:
- Introduction to an ordnance survey map and compass
- Understanding how to use the main map symbols and scales
- How to take a 6 figure grid reference for any given position and also locate such a reference on the map
- Orientating the map with and without a compass
- Using the orientated map to identify land features and indicate direction of travel
- Choosing simple navigation strategies and routes
- Using linear features (e.g. paths and tracks) as handrails in simple navigation exercises
- Understanding access rights and responsibilities
Our instructors aim to make the courses informative, interesting and fun.
