Walk Gradings for our guided and self-led walks

GRADE 1

Easy and suitable for novices.

Terrain: Flattish, mostly paths
Average daily walking distance: 4-7 miles (6-11km)
Average daily ascent: Less than 1000ft (300m)

GRADE 2

Moderate and suitable for people with a reasonably active lifestyle.

Terrain: Some off path rough walking
Navigation (For self-led walking) :May require a bit of thought or skill. Why not join a Glentrek navigation course prior to your holiday?
Average daily walking distance: 8-12 miles (13-20km)
Average daily ascent: 1500ft (450m)

GRADE 3

Strenuous and suitable for regular exercisers or walkers. A good fitness level is required.

Terrain: Some off-path walking, plus rough tracks and varied paths.
Navigation (For self-led walking): Map and compass skills necessary, although may not have to be used. Why not join a Glentrek navigation course prior to your holiday?
Average daily walking distance: 8-14 miles (13-22 km)
Average daily ascent: Up to 2500ft (770m)

GRADE 4

Very strenuous and suitable only for regular walkers/hikers. Good fitness and stamina required.

Terrain: Mountainous, mix of path and rough.
Navigation (For self-led walking): Very likely to be required. Why not join a Glentrek navigation course prior to your holiday?
Average daily walking distance: 8-14 miles (13-22km)
Average daily ascent: Up to 4000ft (1250m)

GRADE 5

Must be regular hill walkers / hikers. Must be fit and experienced enough to enjoy long days with significant ascent and descent.

Terrain: Mostly rough and steep even when on paths
Average Daily Distance: 8-16 miles (13-26km)
Average Daily Ascent: Up to 5000ft (1500m)
Walking For: 6-10 hours (plus stops)
